Joyce Moreno
Joyce Silveira Palhano de Jesus is the daughter of Zemir Silveira Palhano and Helge Arvid Johnston. When the couple separated, which happened before the child was born, Zemir’s first husband, Luiz Antonio Palhano de Jesus, agreed to register her with his surname, but only the mother looked after the child, who also looked after the two children from her first marriage. Educated at the Colégio São Paulo in Ipanema, she grew up in the bossa nova environment, as her brother Newman was a guitarist and befriended Roberto Menescal, Eumir Deodat and other musicians who followed the new sound. It was precisely through imitation that, at the age of fourteen, she began to play the guitar self-taught, following her brother closely; she then studied classical guitar and instrumental technique under the tutelage of Jodacil Domaceno, and attended theory and solfeggio classes taught by Wilma Graça. At the same time, he followed university courses to study journalism at the University of Rio de Janeiro. In 1963, a studio experience at the invitation of Menescal, with the recording of Sambacan, and four years later participation in the II International Song Festival, in which she qualified with her piece Me disseram, contributed to Joyce’s musical formation… She also began to compose her own melodies.
Joyce was also present at the Bossa Nova 50 years concert in 2008, which brought together a large number of Brazilian musicians, including Carlos Lyra, Trio Zimbo, Roberto Menescal, Maria Rita, Leila Pinheiro, Emílio Santiago, João Donato, Leny Andrade, Fernanda Takai, Wanda Sa and Marcos Valle. An ambassador for the Brazilian music scene, she curated an exhibition in London that brought together some of the artists from the first generation of bossa nova: Roberto Menescal, Wanda Sá, Carlos Lyra, Marcos Valle, João Donato and Dori Caymmi, alongside exponents of the following generation. In July he performed at the Blue Note in Tokyo, and the following month he was in Denmark for musical workshops with other instrumentalists such as Yusef Lateef and Miroslav Vitouš. In the company of her daughters Clara Moreno and Ana Martín, and surrounded by the great names of bossa nova, she played several concerts in São Paulo, which led to the DVD and CD Joyce ao vivo – 40 anos de carreira. The following year, he released Visions of Dawn, with unreleased material recorded in Paris by the guitarist with Mauricio Maestro and Naná Vasconcelos, followed by Celebrating Jobim, recorded in 2007, Aquarius with João Donato and Slow Music, with love songs. He performed live with his quartet on a Canadian tour that included Vancouver, Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal. Other tours followed in 2010: in the Canary Islands, together with Menescal, Danilo Caymmi, João Donato and Clara Moreno, in the United States and again in Canada [1]. In 2010, after one of his concerts on Ipanema beach, which featured pieces by important Brazilian composers, the studio activity gave rise to Aquelas Coisas Todas Musica Encontros Ideias , an album with material already released in the past but now enriched; and, after the success of his Rio de Janeiro concert, the artist began production work in Rio de Janeiro, also containing his compositions Meu Rio and Puro Ouro and placed on the market the following year.
Jazz became part of Joyce’s productions with the 2013 album Tudo, recorded by a line-up that included Hélio Alves on piano and Tutty Moreno on drums alongside the guitarist. Cool, from 2015, features a reinterpretation of various jazz classics, while with Raiz she returns to her origins by interpreting bossa nova classics, on some tracks accompanied by Menescal. In the following years, she recorded other albums: Poesia, with pianist Kenny Werner, and Palavra e som , which mixes samba, bossa nova and jazz; and in 2018 Tema: Canções de Sidney Miller ao vivo no IMS, an album in which Joyce and Alfredo Del-Penho revisit the work of Brazilian composer Sidney Miller. From the same year is 50 , an album in which the artist reinterpreted tracks from her debut and which features the participation of Marcos Valle, Zélia Duncan, Francis Hime, Toninho Horta and Menescal. On the Biscoto Fino label, in 2020 she released Fiz uma viagem – Songs for Dori Caymmi , already released three years earlier for the Japanese market, and in May of the following year, alongside Ivan Lins and Marco Valles, Joyce recorded the single Casa que era minha.
In 2019 she recorded the CD Eu sou mulher, eu sou feliz with other singers such as Daniela Mercury, Alcione, Mônica Salmaso and Elba Ramalho.
