CARME CANELA
Carme Canela studied with Dee Kohanna at the Aula de Música Moderna in Barcelona and at the Taller de Músics. She studied vocal technique with Joaquim Proubasta and Maya Mayska and took part in various international seminars with teachers such as Sheila Jordan, among others. At the age of 16 she began her musical career as the lead singer of Orquestra Encantada, with which she recorded 4 LPs.
He has collaborated with international jazz musicians such as David Xirgu, Joan Monné, Bruce Barth, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mike Mossman, Lluís Vidal, Joan Albert Amargós, Perico Sambeat, David Mengual, Dani Pérez, Gorka Benítez, Laura Simó, Zé Eduardo, Iñaki Salvador, Jordi Bonell, Carles Benavent, Bernardo Sassetti, Xavier Dotras, Agustí Fernández, Robert Ashley2.
He also collaborates with various groups such as the Orquestra de Cambra del Teatre Lliure, the Albert Guinovart Ensemble, the Big Band Jazz de Terrassa and the Big Band of the Taller de Músics.
In 2007 she presented her project Carme Canela sings Gioconda Belli. Sencillos Deseos, which premiered on 23 May 2007 at a concert at the TNC in Barcelona, and which she recorded in December 2007 for release in early 2008. In this work, the singer set to music the most sensual and mature verses by Nicaraguan poet Gioconda Belli. Canela sang them in a jazzy tone accompanied by Guillermo Klein on piano, Gorka Benítez on saxophone and flute, Dani Pérez on guitar, Nic Thys on bass and David Xirgu on drums. The disc was also presented on 7 March 2008 at the Auditori in Barcelona as part of the Barnasants Festival and the Mas y Mas/Auditori season.
In 2011, Carme Canela sang the poetic themes of Catalan jazz guitarist Jordi Matas: Carme Canela sings Jordi Matas. In 2012, she recorded the album Nadales (Discmedi) with the Cobla Sant Jordi – Ciutat de Barcelona, the ingredients of which are a cobla, a jazz voice and a repertoire of popular Christmas songs and carols.
JURANDIR DA SILVA
Study of Afro-Brazilian rhythms, with special attention to the characteristic touches and their variations on the guitar. Study their rhythmic units, the different variations of the drums and their relationship with other instruments.
Jurandir Santana, born in Salvador, Bahia, is an instrumentalist, composer and musical director. Throughout his 25-year musical career, he has dedicated himself to performing, researching and publicising Brazilian music. A long career that has given him a deep understanding of the complexity of Brazilian music and in which he has not lacked creation, nor the search for and discovery of new sounds and rhythms.
His identity with music began at the age of ten and since then he has accumulated a wealth of musical knowledge that he has been able to pass on to this day, adding to his musical tours around the world his activity as a teacher of workshops, for which he has developed a highly respected and valued curriculum.
As a teacher, Jurandir has been invited to teach and pass on his musical experience at some of the most famous music schools in the world: Berklee College of Music in Boston (USA), Western Illinois University (USA) and at events such as the Curitiba Music Workshop or the African Marketplace, the most important African music festival in Los Angeles (USA).
In 2003, he reached a milestone in his career as a virtuoso instrumentalist and soloist: collaborating with the well-known American bassist Matt Fergusson and the singer Ithamara Koorax (voted by Downbeat magazine as one of the three best jazz singers in the world).
In 2006, Jurandir Santana released his first album Só Brasil, a project that won the Braskem Culture and Art Award. This work is the result of two decades of musical research, in which he brings a new sound and discovers unexpected nuances of Brazilian music. With this work he travelled for three years, taking his music to Brazil, Spain, Italy, Portugal and the USA.
At the same time, he worked as musical director or guitarist for artists who also express regional rhythms in their work, such as Mariene de Castro, Armandinho Macedo and Roberto Mendes.
In 2012, he decided to live in Barcelona, Spain, with the aim of absorbing new musical information, exchanging and mixing rhythms, getting to know musicians from all over the world.
Today, Jurandir Santana has just released his new album Um Segundo, which includes not only instrumental music, but also sung music and poetry. He is starting to experiment with his singing side and is on tour to premiere his new show.
A well-known musician in the Brazilian market with a solid musical career, Jurandir Santana has achieved a well-deserved place in the international market. His work has made him a prestigious musician in both European countries and the United States.
